A Submariner

I’ve always been fascinated with submarines – when I was growing up one of the books I remember reading was Run Silent, Run Deep. When I working in high tech, I had the opportunity to visit General Dynamics Electric Boat Division in Groton, CT and saw one of the nuclear subs being built – it was quite the sight. These submarines are HUGE – so much larger than the WWII submarines depicted in the book. The Ohio class submarine is almost 2 football fields long and almost 7 stories tall! They don’t look that big in the water as much of the hull can’t be seen – and they’re happiest (ie, most stable) when they’re under water, particularly in rough seas. When it’s underway you can’t really tell you’re moving unless it’s making a sharp maneuver.

So when Stephanie, who served on a submarine, came to my studio for her headshot via Portraits for Patriots, I was fascinated to talk with her a bit about life on a submarine. For those of you who may not know, Portraits for Patriots is a group of volunteer headshot photographers around the US who provide complimentary headshots to transitioning military service members. It’s our way of giving back to those who have served.

Back to Stephanie, she’s got a degree from Temple University, graduating Summa Cum Laude, and will be going to law school when she transitions from the military. Her energy and drive were evident from the minute she stepped into the studio – and we wanted to capture that in her image. No doubt when she will excel in whatever field of law she practices in.

Thank you for your service Stephanie – you rocked your headshot! Wishing you the best of success in your new career!
