Thank You For Your Service Jacob!
When he walked into my studio, he had a huge smile on his face yet was walking with a slight limp. I asked him if he’s OK, and he said yeah – his back bothers him every so often from an accident he had. His accident? He broke his back after jumping out of an airplane in service to his country as he’s in the military and now transitioning to civilian life.
Jacob came to me via the Portraits for Patriots program, where transitioning military service members can sign up and receive a complementary headshot from any of the volunteer “Portrateers” around the country. I meet outstanding people who have made many sacrifices to keep us all safe and help people around the world, it’s fun, rewarding, and a great feeling to be giving back in some small way.
Despite his accident, Jacob’s energy and attitude was infectious – he’s a very positive person with a great sense of humor (he thanked me for paying my taxes!) and was so appreciative. He’s going back to school to get a degree and determine what career path he wants to pursue. We talked about how what ever he decides, it doesn’t mean that’s his career forever – so many people get a degree in a particular field and wind up doing something very different (I have an engineering degree and have never done a lick of engineering).
We also discussed the challenges of leaving the military and transitioning to civilian life, particularly for people who immediately went into the service from high school. Imagine never having to get insurance, search for an apartment, buy furniture, etc.. and suddenly being faced with the need to do all these tings (and more) – or if you’re a male, tie a tie. It can be a bit overwhelming – fortunately the military has programs (that are continually improving) to assist.
Creating great headshots of him was fun and a breeze – his energy/smile jumps out from his image. I have no doubt he will succeed in whatever path he chooses. Jacob, thank you for your service and for the opportunity to work with you – and best of success!!!
