Giving Back
It’s so great when someone you’ve worked with has success – Jake came to my studio recently via the Portraits for Patriots program. P4P is a nationwide volunteer organization of headshot photographers providing complementary headshots for transitioning military service members. It’s both an honor and joy to be part of this program – these veterans are always so appreciative, we have very interesting conversations, and they’re great in front of the camera! And most importantly it’s a way of giving back – it's such a great feeling to have the opportunity to give back and say thank you to those who have served and sacrificed for our country (and Jake is my 70th veteran I’ve shot via P4P).
On a side note, if you haven’t or don’t currently volunteer your time/skills in some way it’s something worth considering. When I started my business, it was a definitive part of my business plan – it’s not just the “right thing to do”, but it also makes good business sense, particularly for smaller businesses. You’re expanding your network, the number of people who can talk about the great work you do – and make no mistake, your customers/potential customers/network take notice. You never know where that work can lead – but even if it doesn’t, the feeling of satisfaction and knowing that you’ve helped someone is priceless.
Jake is in the process of transitioning and recently landed an internship at a company here in Boston, and I have no doubt is the first step in a long, successful career. Congrats Jake, best of success, and thank you for your service!
Have you considered volunteering/do you volunteer your services? How has it worked out for you? Drop a note in the comments – it may incentivize others to do the same.
