Make sure your clothing fits well

One of the most important things you can do to prepare for your headshot is to insure your clothing fits well. This is particularly important for men wearing shits, jackets, and/or ties. Shirts that are too tight will appear too tight, even if they’re not buttoned. If they are, and you’re wearing a tie, a tight fitting shirt will often cut into the skin of the neck making it appear like the skin is overlapping the neck - that can also cause double chinsville, which is not a place you want to be.

Similarly, if a shirt is too large, a larger than normal gap between the shirt collar and the neck will can take away from an otherwise excellent shot. Look at the examples below:

In the above image, the collar is very tight, and you can see part of the skin looks like the collar is cutting into the neck, giving the impression not only of a tight shirt, but that the person is larger. In the image below the shirt fits well - there are no gaps and yet the shirt doesn’t appear tight.

Similarly for open shirts, a shirt that is large can have a large gap in the back or sides of the neck - see below:

Contrast this with an open shirt that fits well:

If you’ve recently lost or gained weight and your shirts aren’t fitting correctly, be sure to have ones that do fit “just right”. Your headshot will look more professional and polished.
